Kind·ness – The quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.
Kindness is free, and is really a simple display of care and concern towards others. In fact, it is such an important noun – but requires action – that there is a day dedicated to reminding us how important it is – Saturday, February 16th.
Kindness is one thing that you can never display too much of. Some people seem to be so cruel, and in today’s times, this has never been more true. However, various studies have proven that kindness is undoubtedly an inherent part of nature, with feelings of care developing in humans while they’re still babies.
National Random Acts of Kindness Day
Random Acts of Kindness Day was initiated in 1995 in Denver, Colorado by a nonprofit organization called The Random Acts Of Kindness Foundation. The event spread to New Zealand nine years later, in 2004, and the observance of the holiday became more and more widespread. Today, the organization urges us to Make Kindness the Norm – and features videos featuring ‘Norm’,
The idea behind National Random Acts of Kindness Day is to cultivate feelings of kindness and brighten up someone’s day. It doesn’t matter how large or small the act is – kindness can spread by the recipient of a kind gesture in turn wanting to spread kindness to the next person…and the next. Imagine how things would change if people would just be kind!

Ways to Display Kindness…on February 17th and every day
Displays of kindness should occur EVERY day! Here are some ways:
- Send an uplifting message to a family member or friend
- Let others merge into traffic with a wave and smile. What’s one extra car in front of you?
- Go outside of your comfort zone to help others, such as holding the door or elevator, or offering to help an elderly person with their groceries
- Share a special compliment and smile with a co-worker or friend
- Treat a friend to a cup of coffee or beverage
- Offer to run an errand for a family member
- Offer someone your seat on a crowded bus
- Give an extra tip at the restaurant and leave an encouraging note with it
- Pick up litter and throw it away…be kind to your community
- SMILE! Smiles are infectious and just might brighten someone’s mood.
- Offer to put someone’s cart away at the store
The list could go to infinity, describing acts of kindness. The world would be just a little bit better if we all made concerted efforts to simply follow The Golden Rule:
