With their budget of $150,000, the team, led by Morton&#8217;s Steakhouse owner Arnie Morton, wanted a HUGE festival, and they were confident they would have 75,000 participants. They wanted a festival full of fun, entertainment, and the vast variation of eateries as diverse as Chicago&#8217;s population itself.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980, Mayor Jane Byrne said &#8220;Yes to the Fest&#8221;, and the first <strong>Taste of Chicago<\/strong> was held!<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fellowshipfleet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Taste-of-Chi-mayor-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Mayor Jane Byrne talks with restaurateurs Eli Schulman (from l.), Rich Melman and Don Roth before the first Taste of Chicago in 1980. [Eli&#8217;s Cheesecake]<\/em><\/p>\n<h1><strong>The First <em>Taste<\/em> Test<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The fest was all set and ready to go. Excitement swirled everywhere as plans were made.\u00a0 A three-block area on Michigan Avenue between Ohio and Wacker, bordered by the Chicago River, Wrigley Building, and Tribune Tower was reserved.\u00a0 The first fest had 36 vendors.<\/p>\n<p>Not only was it a success&#8230;but a MASSIVE success! By 3pm, restaurants were almost sold out of food.\u00a0 At 5 pm, Jimmy Damon took the stage to perform.\u00a0 About 250,000 attended, with gross sales of $330,000! <span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3842 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fellowshipfleet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Taste-of-Chicago-first-crowd-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fellowshipfleet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Taste-of-Chicago-first-crowd-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/fellowshipfleet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Taste-of-Chicago-first-crowd-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/fellowshipfleet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Taste-of-Chicago-first-crowd.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was determined that a larger space was necessary, and in 1981, Grant Park was chosen.\u00a0 This allowed use of the Petrillo Music Shell for performers, which offered access to a stage, dressing rooms, and showers, as well as seating and plenty room.\u00a0 <b>1.4 million attendees<\/b> enjoyed the 2nd year of the Fest!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fellowshipfleet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Trivia-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"110\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Q:<\/strong><\/span> What is the only vendor to have attended the July 4, 1980 Taste of Chicago fest and EVERY one thereafter?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>A:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span> <strong>Eli&#8217;s Cheesecake!\u00a0<\/strong> In 1980, Eli Schulman presented his first taste of Eli&#8217;s Cheesecake at the first ever taste of Chicago.\u00a0 So, as Chicago celebrates the Taste, Eli&#8217;s Cheesecake celebrates its birthday!\u00a0 Each year at the Taste, Eli&#8217;s celebrates with a 1000-lb cheesecake for all to enjoy.
