There’s nothing like one of the WORLD’S most favorite sweet treats – ICE CREAM!  I scream, you scream, we all scr… well, you get the idea. 

Ice cream is a treat so special that it has its own celebration!  On Sunday, July 21st, lovers of the fun, frozen delicacy enjoy National Ice Cream Day! 

 

When was National Ice Cream Day created in the US?

Thanks to President Ronald Reagan, National Ice Cream Day is a thing!

In 1984, he signed a proclamation that declared July to be National Ice Cream Month. The third Sunday of that month became officially known as National Ice Cream Day.

The proclamation – No. 5219, to be exact – describes “a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over 90 percent of the people in the United States.”

Still, the top flavor in the US? Plain old vanilla, according to the International Dairy Foods Association.

So, this weekend, don’t think of your sweet tooth as a guilty pleasure, but as a sort of um…’patriotic duty’.

You Too Can Make Homemade Ice Cream!

The thought may be intimidating, but there is a simple recipe for some basic, homemade, no-churn ice cream that can be spruced up with additions. 

Basic Ice Cream

  • 2 cups (475 milliliters) whole milk
  • 2 cups (475 milliliters) heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • ½ to ¾ cup (115 to 170 grams) white, granulated sugar
  • ½ to ¾ cup (120 to 180 milliliters) flavoring, such as chocolate syrup, caramel, or peanut butter (optional)
  • ¾ to 1 cup (130 to 175 grams) OPTIONAL add-ins, such as: chocolate chips, crushed cookies,  sliced fruit
 in your blender. [3]    Make sure all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
 
 Cover the container with a lid or a sheet of plastic wrap to protect it from getting any ice crystals.
 
 For fluffier ice cream, stir the mixture every hour or so.
