History of the Air Force
President Truman, in 1947, signed the National Security Act. As a result, a new defense organization was created. Also, the United States Air Force was born. Its’ birthday is September 18, 1947. It is independent of, however equal to, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. Before its’ independence, the Air Force had several identities. There were five in total. The Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps (1909); Aviation Section, Signal Corps (1914); United States Army Air Service (1918); United States Army Air Corps (1926), and United States Army Air Forces (1941).
WWII changed the perception of the service of the Airmen by viewing them as a valued commodity. As a result, they were and still are essential in the defense of our nation. As well as, in assistance to our allies. During this time, the Department of Defense was formed. As a result, exceptional Joint Chiefs of Staff for Army, Navy, and Air Force were created. Through the years, this branch of the U.S. military has formed its’ own history and heritage.
